If up-and-coming country trio, Temecula Road isn’t on your radar, they should be. Sisters Maddie and Emma Salute, 15 and 16 years old, respectively, recently teamed up with friend and fellow Temecula, California native Dawson Anderson, 16, to form Temecula Road. They have previously opened for Joe Nichols and will be opening for Jessie James Decker on her Lights Down Low tour this February.
The trio has recently released a cover, and an accompanying video, of Carrie Underwood’s current single, “Heartbeat”. Now, it’s quite normal for artists to cover other artists, but the covers always tended to be older ones. The newest trend to hit music seems to be covering current/new singles. We’ve all heard at least a dozen covers of Bruno Mars’ “Up Town Funk” and Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush”. The majority of the time covers aren’t usually better than or as good as the original version. That’s where Temecula Road is different. The trio’s cover of “Heartbeat” is wonderful, and exactly the way most country fans would have liked Carrie’s version to sound.
As most country fans know, Carrie’s version is heavily influenced by R&B and Pop. In my opinion, the single happens to be one of the weakest songs on Carrie’s new album Storyteller (and I happen to love the record). Temecula Road’s version moves in the opposite direction, taking the song back to its country roots. Their cover features a toned down, predominately country sounding production, with the acoustic guitar front and center. The song takes on a sweet innocence with Temecula Road’s interpretation.
I have to admit, I actually like Temecula Road’s version better than Carrie’s! I’m not fond of the R&B sound that is starting to plague mainstream country radio. When you listen to the trio’s version, you’re struck with the thought that this was how “Heartbeat” was meant to sound like. I also prefer Temecula Road’s video to Carrie’s. This is a song about love and all its sweetness, so I was a bit let down when Carrie released her music video for the single. For me, it just didn’t really do the song’s story justice, Temecula Road’s video does. (Note: This is coming from a huge Carrie Underwood fan, make no mistake)
Check out the video and see for yourself! I look forward to hearing more from this trio!
