In Defense of Brad Paisley’s ‘Wheelhouse’

‘Wheelhouse’ is my favorite Brad Paisley album. As a lifetime fan, I have long poured over the celebrated likes of ‘Mud On The Tires’, ‘5th Gear’ and ‘American Saturday Night’. I have jammed to ‘Time Well Wasted’, got nostalgic to ‘Who Needs Pictures’, and thoroughly enjoyed each track on ‘Part II’ and ‘This Is Country Music’. I even listened to carefully through to ‘Play’ several times, despite the fact that I tend to get bored with instrumental music. I loved it all.

Brad Paisley ‘Crushin’ It’ – Single Review

‘Moonshine In The Trunk’ is evidence that even Brad Paisley, one of the most recognisable faces in country music, still feels the pressure of releasing chart-topping albums. Whilst ‘Wheelhouse’ didn’t perform badly, it failed to produce a number 1 single, and it was widely acknowledged that Brad sacrificed his commercial interest for sonic and thematic originality, which was appreciated by the critics.

Billboard Chart Roundup – Week of January 17th, 2015

In the first Billboard Chart Roundup of 2015, there is naturally little movement after things went stagnant for the Christmas New Year period. The majority of the Country Airplay chart doesn’t move at all, although it does just enough to allow Brad Paisley’s ‘Perfect Storm’ to take #1 for its first week. Meanwhile his fellow CMA Awards host Carrie Underwood continues to dominate Hot Country Songs with ‘Something In The Water’ (it’s #5 at radio), and she also takes the #1 spot on Country Digital Songs, too. However, it’s an act that no longer identifies as country that helms Country Streaming Songs, and that act is Taylor Swift. Her 2012 smash hit ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ is the offending track and it’s followed by a number of her other previous hits on that same chart. Elsewhere Jason Aldean’s ‘Old Boots, New Dirt’ steals #1 on Top Country Albums for the third week in a row, representing the bro-country movement that has been ignored of late in favour of the R&B country pushed by Sam Hunt. The 2nd Annual FTCR Awards… Nominations – Vote for your favorite!

Hey guys! It’s that time of year again, and it’s time for the second annual For The Country Record Awards! It was a huge success last year, so I thought we’d do it again this year with the addition of a third category – such excitement! As with last year, I rounded up some of the FTCR writers and a couple of industry friends to create a panel of voters – each person gave me their top 10 for Album, Song and Artist of the Year, running from November 1st, 2013 until October 31st, 2014 (seeing as we vote in November each year). I then cross-referenced their picks and we came up with a shortlist of the most voted. Now it’s your turn! You have two weeks (deadline December 19) to vote in the polls below for who you think should win. This is incredibly prestigious as the winners get a cyber high five of awesomeness (who wouldn’t want that?!) and make a cyber cake (yum).

Doobie Brothers ‘Southbound’ – Album Review

‘Southbound’ is a compilation of 12 of Doobie Brothers’ classic hits, recorded as duets with some of country music’s biggest names, such as Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton and Zac Brown Band. I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with Doobie Brothers before reviewing this album, and so my first experience of them was through this duets album.

On first listen I loved it. It fit with all of my stereotypes of rock ‘n roll, with the heavy riff-guitars, rock-harmonies in the chorus and Kiss-like vocals. In short, it was what I, as a nineties baby, thought ‘70s rock was like, after exposure to modern re-releases and covers of old rock songs. Continue reading
