Charles Esten On His Love of Music, ‘Nashville’ And Coming Full Circle – Interview

C2C Charles Esten

We were lucky enough to be front and centre during the press conferences at the recent C2C Festival in London. Charles Esten (AKA Deacon Claybourne in ABC’s Nashville) stopped by to talk to the media about music being his first love, writing with Deana Carter, playing Deacon, his respect for Connie Britton and the writers and actors on the show, playing Buddy Holly in the West End, his work on Whose Line Is It Anyway, UK audiences, playing the Opry and staying humble. You can read what went down below.

Country to Country (C2C) Festival 2016 | Day One, London – Review

miranda lambert c2c

The Country to Country festival, otherwise known as C2C, started big and has been growing in scale year on year. Prior to its inauguration in 2013, there had long been demand for a country music festival of its type, and it’s clear from the 60,000+ patrons across the three-day weekend this year that the demand is only increasing. The US acts coming over were keen to point out on numerous occasions that no line-up like this had ever existed at an American festival, and from a personal standpoint I would certainly suggest that the fourth edition of this festival was the best yet.

I have seen every CMA Songwriters event to grace the O2 Arena, and there are always high expectations. I love the camaraderie and collaboration of the artists and songwriters, the sprinkling of hits with little-known gems and brand new material, and how the crowd treats the performers with such reverence. There’s the stories, too; how the songs came to be and little tidbits of the aftermath of their release. This show was no different, and yet it was on a higher level than any songwriters show I had seen yet.

Chip Esten On The Blurred Lines of Life & ‘Nashville’ – The Buddy & Jim Show Recap

chip

Chip Esten will tell you that sometimes the line between Nashville the show and real life not only gets blurred but goes away.

The songwriter who plays the character Deacon Claybourne was on tour a few weeks ago with Claire Bowen, the singer and actress who plays his niece Scarlet O’Connor. They got off the tour bus, said their goodbyes and see you at work the next days. The next day, Deacon and Claire were doing a scene with Gunnar Scott played by Sam Palladio. The three were right by a tour bus when he and Bowen had a revelation.

“We just looked at each other thinking about the crazy lives we’re leading,” Esten remembered as he sat onstage at the City Winery talking with Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale. The show was the first of what is expected to be a monthly broadcast at City Winery for the Buddy & Jim Show on Sirius XM Outlaw Country. Continue reading

Charles Esten ‘Like New’ – Single Review

51590-thumb

If you’re a Nashville fan, you might find cast member Charles Esten’s new radio single ‘Like New’ somewhat familiar. It was originally featured on the show in season 2, and became available on iTunes during Spring 2014 (as the latter half of that season was airing). However, the song reappeared on a recently aired episode (Season 4, episode 7) on Wednesday, November 11, as – spoiler alert – Deacon uses it to launch his bar The Beverly.
