CMA Festival Country’s Night To Rock: Recap + Loads of Opinion

cma fest 2015

CMA Festival’s Country’s Night To Rock aired this week (Aug. 4th) on ABC… and it was pretty forgettable. Country super group Little Big Town hosted the event and did a good job at it, it’s just too bad the event wasn’t as good as they were.

Darius Rucker ‘Southern Style’ – Single Review

Darius Rucker SS

Darius Rucker has had an illustrious career in music. He first gained fame as the lead singer of the Grammy Award-winning rock band, Hootie & The Blowfish, which he founded in 1986. He released a solo R&B album in 2002 and 6 years later he was signed to Capitol Records Nashville as a country music artist. He is the first African-American to chart a solo number 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart since Charlie Pride in 1983. Rucker is also the first African-American to win the New Artist Award from the Country Music Association.

Billboard Chart Roundup – Week of April 18th, 2015

DariusRucker2015

Zac Brown Band have managed to score the first multi-week #1 on Country Airplay in a while with ‘Homegrown’, as it holds onto the top spot for a second week running. It fends off Sam Hunt’s ‘Take Your Time’, which currently sits at #2 on the radio chart (and indeed, is losing spins at time of writing), but I’m sure Sam himself isn’t too bothered. After all, the song continues to hold #1 on Hot Country Songs, Country Digital Songs and Country Streaming Songs, and his album ‘Montevallo’, despite a one-place drop, is still #3 on Top Country Albums. At the helm of that chart this week is Darius Rucker’s new release ‘Southern Style’, which shifted 52,000 copies in its first week, while Luke Bryan’s ‘Spring Break… Checkin’ Out’ gets knocked to #2 and Jon Wolfe debuts at #25 with ‘Natural Man’. Stay tuned to see who will become the radio #1 next week, as Sam Hunt, Lee Brice, Chris Young and Dierks Bentley all vie for the crown. Read on for the full top 50s/60s this week!

Rucker scheduled for NBC’s ‘TODAY Show,’ ‘Ellen,’ and ABC’s ‘The Chew’ appearances to celebrate his seventh No. 1 single “Homegrown Honey” and the release of his fourth Country album

With 20 years of hits in his discography, you’d think three-time GRAMMY winner Darius Rucker would get used to them. As “Homegrown Honey,” the first single from his new Capitol Nashville album Southern Style, hits No. 1 on the Mediabase Country songs chart this week, however, the rocker-turned-country star admits he still gets the same feeling: “Wow!”

Darius Rucker ‘Southern Style’ – Album Review

Darius-Rucker-Southern-Style-300x300

One of the best things about Darius Rucker’s music is that he seems to write from a very personal perspective, largely ignoring the trend of songs about partying and ‘getting your feel-good on’. Darius is at his best when writing more hard-hitting lyrical songs, such as ‘Miss You’ from his last album ‘True Believers’, which didn’t perform that well on radio, peaking at 48 on US Country Airplay charts, but was critically acclaimed. Given that his last single from ‘True Believers’ was in February last year, ‘Southern Style’ was long-awaited, although being in the UK, my wait was broken by his amazing UK tour, where he played the first single from the new record ‘Homegrown Honey’.

Perhaps because tongues wagged when she performed at Kenny Chesney’s launch of The Big Revival tour in Nashville and planted a big kiss on his lips, perhaps because she won at the recent iHeartRadio Awards, or maybe just because she’s Taylor Swift, but the pop superstar’s country-labelled back catalogue in back on the up on Country Albums this week. ‘Red’ takes the top spot, followed by its deluxe version at #8 and a host of others; these include ‘Speak Now (Bonus Track Version)’ at #11, ‘Taylor Swift’ at #12, ‘Fearless (Platinum Edition)’ at #14 and ‘Fearless’ at #19. The Shires, meanwhile, are bringing up the rear at #2 and #13 with their deluxe and standard versions of ‘Brave’, while Darius Rucker brings a new entry at #3 with ‘Southern Style’, his fourth country album released just yesterday. Also relatively new to the chart are Striking Matches, whose debut album ‘Nothing But The Silence’ remains at #4 after surviving the potential second-week drop.
