Kacey Musgraves ‘Dime Store Cowgirl’ – Single Review

Kacey Musgraves’ new sophomore album ‘Pageant Material’ seemed to create a feverish build-up of anticipation before its release, with the reviews coming thick and fast as soon as the majority of people had got their hands on it. Of course not all feedback is going to be positive, but the polarity of reviews I have seen has been quite surprising. Personally, I think ‘Pageant Material’ is absolutely brilliant, mostly exploring different and more nuanced themes, whilst using a slightly more edgy and complex sound than her debut ‘Same Trailer Different Park’ made use of. What I mean by this, is that instead of nice catchy melodies about straight forward (yet depressingly controversial) issues like homosexuality and blazing your own path through life, she starts to explore topics such as geographical and personal identity, such as in the second single ‘Dime Store Cowgirl’.

iTunes UK Country Chart Roundup – Week of 30th June, 2015

Please note: Due to Global Release Day switching all releases to a Friday, iTunes UK roundups will also switch to Fridays as of July 17th to co-ordinate with up-to-the-minute changes regarding new releases on that day. Its American counterpart, the Billboard chart roundup, will move to Tuesdays to account for changing Billboard chart weeks.

Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Pageant Material’ holds onto #1 on Country Albums for another week this week, spurred on by last week’s highly-anticipated release and her UK tour announcement that came a couple of days later. Her debut album ‘Same Trailer Different Park’ has dropped a few places to #11, but still holds strong, and for the most part Kacey is joined (as usual) by Taylor Swift’s back catalogue. However, for once her self-titled debut has taken #2, while ‘Red’ gets pushed to #3, ‘Fearless (Platinum Edition)’ remains at #4, ‘Speak Now (Bonus Track Version)’ sticks to #5, ‘Red (Deluxe Version)’ is at #7, and ‘Fearless’ is at #10. Once again The Shires join the two women, placing ‘Brave (Deluxe)’ at #6 while ‘Brave’ is at #14, while other homegrown talent Nathan Carter gets a boost to #9 with ‘Beautiful Life’.
