Dear Country Radio: Is Lettuce Really The Best Part Of A Salad Anyway?

I read an article in Country Aircheck last night, where prominent radio consultant Keith Hill advises his clients (aka radio stations) not only to not play female artists back-to-back, but to even further lower the amount they play female artists at all. For those of you who don’t listen to country radio or pay attention to the charts, let me tell you the amount they play female artists is already criminally low. In fact, in 2014 only 18% of the top 100 songs were female-voiced. Hill argues that playing too many female artists will result in lower ratings. As you can expect, Twitter subsequently blew up, referring to the following quote as #SaladGate.

C2C Festival Pop-Up Acts @ O2 Arena, London, UK | March 7th, 2015 – Review

It was a busy affair at the O2 Arena in London last weekend as many tens of acts took to the free pop-up stages around the venue, to play to the tens of thousands of waiting fans who were milling about. The Country to Country Festival (otherwise known as C2C) was in its third year and had burst into life with an extremely popular main stage line-up, and the increasing exposure both the event and country music had gained in the intervening twelve months. At 10:30am when we arrived there were a few eager fans wandering around, but it soon got crazy as by 1pm it became difficult to move in many parts of the large multi-venue arena, particularly around such acts as The Shires, Sam Hunt, Striking Matches and David Bradley, who were commanding more than a thousand people at their respective stages. We were front and center at this year’s event, covering a multitude of acts in review and in pictures. You can check out our Instagram for impromptu phone shots and updates, or read on for our reviews (collaborative between Vickye, Andy and Nick) of the acts we saw and Amy’s fabulous photos.

Katie Armiger On Touring In The UK, New Music, Country Radio, Gay Country Artists And The Spotify Issue – Interview

24425

Katie Armiger recently spent just over a week touring the UK for the first time; headlining the US Girls With Guitars tour, she was joined by Holly May and Madeleine Smith, making it a true taste of country/pop girl power. I sat down with her when she visited Liverpool (review of that night’s show here) to talk about her experiences on British shores, country radio and its lack of women, her own career resiliency, the new single and upcoming album, the climate for gay country artists and whether she would follow Taylor Swift in taking her music off Spotify. Not only was she a delight and a lot of fun to talk to, she also gave some interesting and nuanced perspectives on things happening in the industry. Read on for more.

Katie Armiger @ The East Village Arts Club, Liverpool, UK | November 24, 2014 – Review

KatieArmiger

I arrived at the East Village Arts Club just outside of Liverpool City Centre a few hours early for Katie Armiger’s show that night. It was the final date on the US Girls With Guitars tour, which had seen Katie, Holly May and friends play up and down the country for the past eight days, marking the first time any of these women had played on European shores. When I got to the venue and headed upstairs Katie was nearly done with her soundcheck, belting out one of her songs and already sounding perfect for the audience that was set to be there in a couple of hours’ time. She finished and jumped off stage, bouncy, friendly and in a good mood, ready to go ahead with our interview (which will go live on the site next week). Throughout the twenty minutes that we chatted she was warm and approachable, fun and youthful yet thoughtful and nuanced in her answers to some difficult questions, and this impression of her continued later on as she and her tour manager danced goofily throughout Madeleine Smith’s preceding set.

Katie Armiger ‘One Night Between Friends’ – Single Review

katie armiger one night between friends

It’s been a long road for Katie Armiger. She signed to Cold River Records at the age of 15 (2007) and released her self-titled debut album a month after her 16th birthday; the album didn’t chart and neither did the two singles released from it, but it was the same story with her second album ‘Believe’. She began charting on Hot Country Songs in 2010 with ‘Kiss Me Now’ (a top 60 hit), while the accompanying album ‘Confessions of a Nice Girl’ made #58 on the country album charts, and two follow-up singles, ‘Best Song Ever’ and ‘Scream’ made it to #42 and #47 respectively. Her fourth album ‘Fall Into Me’ has been the most successful to date, with three charting singles and her best effort on radio ever with ‘Better In A Black Dress’ (still not top 40), while the album peaked at #7. Now she has released her fourteenth single ‘One Night Between Friends’, the first from an upcoming fifth album and still without a top 40 hit. So what’s going wrong?
