Hall of Fangirl – March 2015 (C2C Edition)

c2c 2015

Every year we use our monthly Hall of Fangirl feature to take a look at the acts playing C2C Festival in London (+ Dublin, Oslo and Stockholm), since it’s become the UK and Europe’s premier country music festival, despite only coming up on its third year. Let’s dig in and take a look at some of the acts on the bill.

Brandy Clark

Currently traditional country’s torchbearer within the mainstream field, Brandy Clark is coming off the back of two Grammy nominations (Best New Artist and Best Country Album for ’12 Stories’) and a Grammy performance with Dwight Yoakam (‘Hold My Hand’) that resulted in the highest percentage sales gain for any performing artist on the night. As well as playing the CMA Songwriters Series the previous night, she will be opening day one of the festival, no doubt bringing in a whole new wave of fans. Check out her Grammy performance below.

The 2nd Annual FTCR Awards… Nominations – Vote for your favorite!

Logo500x500-awards

Hey guys! It’s that time of year again, and it’s time for the second annual For The Country Record Awards! It was a huge success last year, so I thought we’d do it again this year with the addition of a third category – such excitement! As with last year, I rounded up some of the FTCR writers and a couple of industry friends to create a panel of voters – each person gave me their top 10 for Album, Song and Artist of the Year, running from November 1st, 2013 until October 31st, 2014 (seeing as we vote in November each year). I then cross-referenced their picks and we came up with a shortlist of the most voted. Now it’s your turn! You have two weeks (deadline December 19) to vote in the polls below for who you think should win. This is incredibly prestigious as the winners get a cyber high five of awesomeness (who wouldn’t want that?!) and make a cyber cake (yum).

Did you miss ‘CMA Presents Lady Antebellum’ on Public Television’s Front and Center last Tuesday? Never fear! It will be re-airing on the network for the next few weeks, and you can check out a couple of videos from the show below! Along with the debut of new music from their recently released studio album 747, the country trio and multi-CMA Award winners perform hits “Need You Now,” “Just A Kiss” and “I Run To You.” The performance also includes first-time onstage collaborations with songwriters Rodney Clawson, Tom Douglas, Josh Kear, Luke Laird, and Abe Stoklasa, all sharing stories behind some of Lady Antebellum’s hottest songs.

Lady Antebellum ‘Freestyle’ – Single Review

lady-antebellum-freestyle

Of the few potential singles on ‘747’ (which I wasn’t altogether a fan of) that I would have supported, ‘Freestyle’ wasn’t one of my picks, I’ll be honest. There are far stronger melodies and lyrics on the record, even if as an album it certainly wasn’t representative of the identity they have cultivated over the years. ‘Freestyle’ follows the pop trajectory that ‘Bartender’ began, providing them with a more upbeat, dynamic, wall-shaking sound than they have previously fostered. It’s one that doesn’t always pay off on the album, although admittedly I prefer ‘Freestyle’s sound to ‘Bartender’s. At least here they don’t sound like they’re trying to pull off an overproduced S Club 7 tune with questionable morals.

Lady Antebellum @ The Brooklyn Bowl, London – October 14, 2014 – Review

IMG_0647.JPG

It says a lot about the status of any musician(s) when they can sell out a venue in 3 minutes, especially for a country act performing in the United Kingdom, even more so. Lady Antebellum have been for sometime an internationally recognised act, so it shouldn’t come as any great surprise when tickets sold out as quick as they for their intimate gig at The Brooklyn Bowl in London.

Country to Country Festival (C2C) 2015 Line Up Announcement

C2C_web_landscape

The wait is finally over! Yesterday at 6pm the line up for the 2015 Country to Country festival was announced at the Brooklyn Bowl in London, just before Lady Antebellum, who had already announced they would be headlining the event on the Saturday. Legendary broadcaster Bob Harris was in attendance to announce the line-up which was done quite cleverly by video with song clips from all the performing artists.

As you can see below there have been some huge names announced, and with the C2C event expanding to Stockholm and Oslo, it’s clear to see that C2C is growing into a must see event in Europe as well as in the UK and Ireland.

iTunes UK Country Chart Roundup – Week of 7th October, 2014

lady antebellum 747 deluxe

With Lady Antebellum’s week-later release of ‘747’ in the UK, it’s hardly surprising that the deluxe version and the standard occupy #1 and #2 this week, just one day after their regional release. Meanwhile last week’s new releases have begun to fall down the chart; Lucinda Williams’ ‘Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone’ is still holding strong at #7, Blake Shelton’s ‘Bringing Back The Sunshine’ is at #11, and Tim McGraw’s ‘Sundown Heaven Town’ drops to #13. There are a couple of new albums from smaller acts on the chart too, however, with Americana duo Lewis & Leigh leading the pack at #8 with their ‘Night Drives’ EP, and The Chaplins’ EP ‘Introducing The Chaplins’ at #14.
