I have seen every CMA Songwriters event to grace the O2 Arena, and there are always high expectations. I love the camaraderie and collaboration of the artists and songwriters, the sprinkling of hits with little-known gems and brand new material, and how the crowd treats the performers with such reverence. There’s the stories, too; how the songs came to be and little tidbits of the aftermath of their release. This show was no different, and yet it was on a higher level than any songwriters show I had seen yet.

Tim McGraw ‘Humble and Kind’ – Single Review

humbleandkind-660x400

Image from Country Outfitter

Lately, Tim McGraw’s output has been pretty touch and go. McGraw, a veteran in the industry, found himself trying to compete with the new, young bucks, which resulted in him changing up his sound and trying to emulate the Bro Country sound with the atrocious single “Truck Yeah” and mediocre ones like “Southern Girl” and “Lookin’ For That Girl”. Now, it’s not all doom and gloom, as McGraw has managed to somewhat balance the bad out with a few good singles, like “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s” and “Diamond Rings and Old Barstools”, but alas, he isn’t as steady and stable as he use to be, musically. His latest record, Damn Country Music, received high praise from critics, but I have to admit, I wasn’t totally impressed.

The best of 2015? How about ‘A Song to Live By’ instead…

Written by Esther Harper

‘Tis the season for lists – the best of this, the worst of that. We humans love to make sense of the year gone by with our categorisations of the trivial and important. We like to remind ourselves of what to remember, and perhaps tell others of what they missed. Perhaps you’re a compulsive list-maker in your everyday life, or perhaps you like to trawl these best-of lists to discover music that might have passed you by. If you are the latter and seeking the top ten country songs of the year, then I’m afraid you’re out of luck here. There is no list.  There is only one song: Humble and Kind, by Lori McKenna.

It was already a busy day the morning Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose co-wrote a new song called “Girl Crush.”

“We didn’t think anything of it,” Hillary was saying on the eve of the CMA Awards, still remembering being in her pajamas and writing what she calls a “coffee song” around 9:00 a.m. “Really. Honestly.”

Trying to put it all in perspective, Lindsey said: “You can’t pretend to know any of what was going to happen. We’re all trying to write a love song every day that no one has heard before – and that’s just our job.”

The three were gathered onstage at Sirius XM’s CMA Songwriters Special on The Highway. The show brought together seven of the songwriters behind this year’s nominees for Song of The Year.

Hall of Fangirl – May 2015

This month we are continuing our spotlight on the songwriters of Nashville with a focus on Reba’s new album ‘Love Somebody’. Heralded by many as her best album in years, the project is peppered with an impressive selection of current, mainstream writers including the likes of Shane McAnally, Brandy Clark, Sam Hunt, Rhett Akins, Ben Hayslip, Josh Osborne and Ashley Gorley. However, for May’s Hall of Fangirl, there are three other singer/songwriters whom I felt were more than worthy of your listening. Check them out below.

Some of the best music out there today isn’t on well-known artists’ albums; it’s hiding on SoundCloud. Beyond being a vehicle for artists and labels to feature sample tracks from their new work, SoundCloud is a magical repository of uncut demo tracks just waiting for an audience.

Here are some of the best songs you’ve never heard of…
