Country to Country (C2C) Festival 2016 | Day Three, London – Review

eric church c2c

After days two and three had been bigger and better than anybody could have expected, it was hard to imagine how day three could top it. Andrew Combs was around to get things going, introducing the rootsier, edgier sound of the evening. He was by far the most Americana act on the bill, with many wondering how he reached the main stage, but nonetheless he gave a good performance with a selection of material showcasing his great lyrics, a real country sound and some old school rock ‘n’ roll. For me he didn’t have as much on stage charisma as some of the superstar acts, but that’s to be expected, and playing to a fairly empty arena (as it unfortunately was at that stage) has got to have an impact.

Striking Matches can count all of their songs that have appeared on the television show Nashville. There’s already been eight and one more is coming soon.

“I’m recording another one,” executive music producer Buddy Miller revealed on a recent Buddy & Jim Show taped in front of a live audience at the City Winery in Nashville.

“I don’t know if you spoiled it,” guitarist Justin Davis shot back. It was the first Buddy & Jim Show which will be taped monthly in front of a live audience at City Winery. The show featured musical guests Parker Millsap, Lee Ann Womack and Striking Matches. Miller remembered how the television show’s music supervisor Frankie Pine had gone out one day a few years ago and came back talking incessantly about the duo.

I’ve seen Striking Matches play five times, and this would be the second time I saw John & Jacob, so I had an inkling of what would be in store on the night of November 11th, and I was excited about it. The venue (a fairly recently-refurbished arts club on the fringes of Liverpool city centre) was already about half-full when John & Jacob took to the stage at 8pm, all smiles and energy. Kicking things off enthusiastically and egging on the crowd, they were quick to win almost everybody over, with some present clearly already big fans of the duo. Charismatic and enamoured by their first trip to the city (even making a red versus blues joke), they were a lot of fun and their joy drove the crowd into a cheering frenzy, especially on the likes of ‘Done’, a Band Perry song they co-wrote.
