Sturgill Simpson ‘A Sailor’s Guide To Earth’ – Album Review

sturgill-sailor-guide-earth-new-album

Sturgill Simpson hasn’t shown us what he’s about yet. His debut ‘High Top Mountain’ introduced him as a sincere writer with a voice to stretch the generations without taking a lot of risk. ‘Metamodern Sounds In Country Music’ took us down a different path, taking his traditional sound and warping it into something so much more interesting with his innovative writing and the ballsy production by Dave Cobb. For ‘A Sailor’s Guide To Earth’, Sturgill has taken over the reigns fully, writing and producing the whole album himself, and thus exposing much more about who he is as a musician. I’m always impressed by musicians producing their records because whilst writing is hugely important, the production quality can break a great poem, or lift an average lyric to different heights.

Sturgill Simpson @ The Beacon Theatre, NYC | September 19, 2015 – Review

SturgillSimpson_2015_328x253_v2

To say that Sturgill Simpson is the “long come to Jesus” of country music isn’t hyperbole, PR spin, or folklore. In fact, there is really no other way to explain Simpson than as “the no-bullshit savior of the Nashville sound.” A plain and rather unimpressive man in stature, sporting a common white shirt and jeans, Simpson barely acknowledged the crowd during his 23 song set at the historic Beacon Theater in New York. He wasn’t there for conversation and his live show wasn’t surrounded by glitz and flash.

Taking a step away from our usual habit of spotlighting songwriters in this monthly feature, I thought I would showcase some recent badass covers for September’s edition. Largely focusing on country and Americana artists covering some classic songs, I hope this provides a great soundtrack to your Monday and beyond! Thanks to a number of friends and Twitter followers for some of these selections.

The 2nd Annual FTCR Awards… Nominations – Vote for your favorite!

Logo500x500-awards

Hey guys! It’s that time of year again, and it’s time for the second annual For The Country Record Awards! It was a huge success last year, so I thought we’d do it again this year with the addition of a third category – such excitement! As with last year, I rounded up some of the FTCR writers and a couple of industry friends to create a panel of voters – each person gave me their top 10 for Album, Song and Artist of the Year, running from November 1st, 2013 until October 31st, 2014 (seeing as we vote in November each year). I then cross-referenced their picks and we came up with a shortlist of the most voted. Now it’s your turn! You have two weeks (deadline December 19) to vote in the polls below for who you think should win. This is incredibly prestigious as the winners get a cyber high five of awesomeness (who wouldn’t want that?!) and make a cyber cake (yum).
