Retro rock-‘n’-rollers with a taste for country soul, Sugar & The Hi-Lows have been enjoying a fruitful year. They released their sophomore album ‘High Roller’ last June and in November accompanied Kacey Musgraves on her European tour, following a string of US appearances. Comprised of singer-songwriters Amy Stroup and Trent Dabbs, I had to chance to chat with Amy via email recently, about the European tour, the album, and how the duo slots in with their individual solo work.

Maren Morris At Sea – The Buddy & Jim Show Recap

The day Maren Morris met Buddy Miller, she and her publisher were pitching songs for the television show “Nashville.” When Morris headed out to sea on the annual Cayamo music cruise, Miller asked her to play the song she played that day called “The Book.”

Miller and Morris were sharing stories somewhere out in the Atlantic on a special Cayamo taping of the Buddy & Jim Show on SiriusXM radio.

“My informant Kate York says you’re breaking all kinds of records,” Miller said of news of Morris receiving the most radio adds for a female artist.

The band took to the stage with a bang at 7:45pm, with Amy Stroup the driving force behind their energetic live persona as she danced, sang and hit her tambourine with purpose and effervescence. Trent Dabbs, the other member of the duo, also pulled his weight, bringing a cool 50s swagger to proceedings as he grooved to the beat. While mostly upbeat, they did bring it down for a couple of tracks including the lovely ‘Right Time To Tell You’, winning over much of the enthusiastic crowd (most of whom were already seated by the time the support act came on, a fairly rare occurrence).

Sugar & The Hi-Lows ‘High Roller’ – Album Review

sugar and the hi-lows

Some projects are labors of love, borne of passion for a particular style or level of artistry, of recognition of the spark that comes with a magical collaboration. Those projects tend inevitably to shine, regardless of how many people will actually get to hear them, because the music that poured out like therapy was as fulfilling for the artist as it would turn out to be for the listener. No corners were cut. No sacrifices made. Just heart and soul.
