iTunes UK Country Chart Roundup – Week of 7th August, 2015

the shires barn

Well, looks like the release of The Shires’ new single ‘All Over Again’ and their appearances at a slew of festivals this summer have pushed ‘Brave’ back to #1 on Country Albums. Interestingly this is the first time, perhaps ever (if not months) since the standard edition has eclipsed the sales of the ‘Deluxe’ edition, which this week sits at #6. At #2 is Johnny Cash’s ‘The Legend of’, ahead of his other entry on the charts ‘The Man Comes Around’ at #22, while Luke Bryan’s brand new record ‘Kill The Lights’ is surprisingly only at #5, although as I write this it’s only lunchtime and could easily have risen by the time this gets published.

The Shires ‘All Over Again’ – Single Review

the shires aoa

Less than five months after the release of their debut album ‘Brave’, The Shires are releasing their fifth single from the record. That’s quite a lot for a top Nashville act, never mind a fledgling UK act, but I suppose that’s a testament to the quick rise of this duo. ‘All Over Again’ follows ‘Nashville Grey Skies’, ‘Tonight’, ‘Friday Night’ and ‘State Lines’, all of which are mid-tempo to up-tempo fun tracks that range between themes of partying and falling in love. ‘All Over Again’ follows this pattern although it’s far more rooted in the “falling in love” category; in fact, that’s its sole mission statement. “Back when you were younger and the summer would last forever, looking at you and loving you, that’s the way you made me feel, oh we’ve been too caught up in all that stuff we call life… I think I’m falling in love with you all over again,” the pair sing, Crissie taking the first verse, Ben taking the second, and coming together in those smooth harmonies for the rest.

iTunes UK Country Chart Roundup – Week of 28th April, 2015

the shires state lines

With the release of The Shires’ new video for ‘State Lines’, their UK headlining tour and tons of other promo (including national press coverage), their album ‘Brave’ has shot back to #1 and #3 on Country Albums this week. Bringing up the rear is Zac Brown Band with their brand new album ‘Jekyll + Hyde’ at #2, still on pre-order for the UK with a delayed release date, and Tyler Farr’s new album ‘Suffer In Peace’, released yesterday and currently standing at #11. Of course, Taylor Swift makes her mark as usual with ‘Red’ at #4, ‘Fearless (Platinum Edition)’ at #7, ‘Red (Deluxe Version)’ at #8, ‘Taylor Swift’ at #9, and ‘Speak Now (Bonus Track Version)’ at #25, but this week sees something of a decline for her.

It may have been a Sunday night, but that didn’t mean the thousand or so people crammed into Manchester Academy 2 weren’t in the mood to enjoy themselves. In fact, by the time support act John & Jacob took to the stage at 8pm (an hour after doors opened in the often hard-to-find student union venue), the majority of the crowd had already found their place in the general admission-only standing space, and proceeded to cheer enthusiastically for the duo. Initially under the impression that they were brothers, their clear-cut Everly Brothers harmonies, matching purple suits with white shirts and even co-ordinated facial hair (both sported some effortlessly scruffy stubble and a moustache), easily led me to believe that they were related, and indeed they never elaborated upon that at any point in the set. In fact, that they are John Davidson and Jacob Bryant, two friends from Birmingham, Alabama, who usually form part of a five-piece band.

The Shires On Their Upcoming Headlining Tour, Being ‘Brave’ and The Biggest C2C Festival Yet – Interview

the shires c2c

The Shires performing on the Satellite Stage at C2C Festival, March 8th, 2015.

It would be safe to say that The Shires are having a pretty good time of it at the moment. Fresh off several much-attended performances at this year’s C2C Festival in London, their debut album ‘Brave’ launching to reach the UK albums top 10 in its first week, and gearing up for a headlining tour with half of the shows already sold out, they’re on top of the world. The duo, made up of Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes, captured the UK audience with a country pop sound back in 2013 on their debut single ‘Nashville Grey Skies’, and have been building buzz for becoming the biggest British country act, certainly of recent memory if not of all time. They and Ward Thomas have become the first UK country acts to sign US record deals, and incidentally their ‘Homegrown’ co-headlining tour with the sister duo was a huge success last year. I spoke to The Shires recently over the phone, on the eve of their UK tour and a trip to LA to film the video for upcoming single ‘State Lines’, about C2C, the album, touring, coming together as a duo, a potential launch in the US, and their work with Kip Moore.
