Ward Thomas ‘Guest List’ – Single Review

ward thomas promo

Ward Thomas have been steadily building up quite the following over the past couple of years, from performing at the c2c pop stages in 2014, they have gone from strength to strength and are certainly flying the flag for British Country. Oddly enough they are not particularly well known outside of the UK but after a near sell out headlining tour of the UK and co-headling tour with the undisputed greatest duo of all time The Shires, and a lot of support from Radio 2, it’s only a matter of time before they choose to try their luck state-side.

Cambridge Folk Festival 2015 | Day Two – Review

Angaleena wraps up her set with Pain Pills at #cff15

Friday at the 51st Cambridge Folk Festival was a real treat for Americana fans. In the middle of the afternoon, Angaleena Presley, accompanied by her band, played the main stage. She opened her set with American Middle Class, the title of her solo album, before segueing into some “hillbilly music” with One Horse Town and Fastest Girl in Town. After three further songs with her band, she played two acoustic numbers, which she explained was how she’d been touring the UK over the past few weeks. If some of the crowd had seemed a little less than enthused by her set thus far, her performance of the yet-unreleased song If You Bless My Heart, I’ll Smack Your Face, was the perfect ice-breaker; the crowd laughed and applauded in approval of her sassy lyrics. Her band then returned to play four more songs, including my personal favourite of hers, Knocked Up. Continue reading

Ward Thomas @ The East Village Arts Club, Liverpool, UK | April 1, 2015 – Review

ward thomas gig 2

Ward Thomas at the East Village Arts Club in Liverpool, UK, on April 1st, 2015. Taken by FTCR.

It may have been a cold and drizzly night in Liverpool when Ward Thomas took their headlining tour to the East Village Arts Club, but that didn’t affect the solid enthusiasm of the crowd. In fact, even when support act Jessica Ridley took to the stage with way too much brash American smiles and enthusiasm for a decidedly middle-aged British crowd, they gave her the benefit of the doubt and even responded to some of her constant attempts to interact with the crowd (for the record, she needs to tone every aspect of her act down just a little bit). So by the time Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas took to the stage, the few hundred people squashed into the small gig space were buzzing but ultimately not prepared for the novel way in which the girls would start the show. Stomping their feet for a beat and singing a capella, they performed one minute of Loretta Lynn’s ‘You Ain’t Woman Enough’ in one of the most pleasant surprises of the night before launching into ‘Way Back When’ for a great thematic segue and a perfect tribute to the country music of years gone by.

VIDEO: Ward Thomas ‘Town Called Ugley’

ward thomas a town called ugley

Ward Thomas continue their streak of success with brand new single ‘Town Called Ugley’ and the amusing, charming video. The single doesn’t get released until March 2nd but the video is now available on YouTube (below), showcasing a great lyric, Vince Gill’s amazing guest guitar skills and the animation talents of London-based company Dog & Rabbit. The result is a part-rock ‘n’ roll, part country, part blues track about getting stuck in a small town in Essex called Ugley, and the video is the perfect accompaniment, including some real laugh out loud moments (the llama! Seriously, there’s a llama).
