VIDEO: Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard ‘It’s All Going To Pot’

willie nelson merle haggardYou might have heard recently that Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard are collaborating for their sixth duets album ‘Django & Jimmie’. Named after their respective heroes Django Reinhardt and Jimmie Rodgers and the title track written by Jeff Prince and Jimmy Melton, the album will hit stores on June 1 and consists of fourteen tracks, mostly written by the pair of them with a couple of outside cuts. One of those outside cuts is the album’s lead single ‘It’s All Going To Pot’, which was released (appropriately) on April 20, otherwise known as 420 day, the unofficial celebration of cannabis and its consumption.

Deep In The Heart of Texas: Willie’s Heartbreaker Banquet & Other Tales From The Lone Star State

sxsw day 2-6
On a Clear Day You Can See Texas: Nikki Lane’s Heartbreak and Lace

At Willie Nelson’s private ranch in Luck, Texas, celebration is underway in what’s come to be known as the Heartbreaker Banquet. The day-long music festival occurs during SXSW and brings together the best in Americana, rock and indie-folk music. Thirty minutes from downtown Austin, it’s like another world stepping into the old west of centuries past.

Originally built as a backdrop for the movie “Red Headed Stranger,” it has its own jailhouse and chapel and saloon.  Lore has it that when Nelson filed the movie he insisted they change a scene instead of burning down one of the buildings. A tornado tore through here a while back and one of the buildings looked like what the singer called “The Leaning Tower of Luck.”

Ray Benson On Wynonna, Willie & Asleep At The Wheel: The Buddy & Jim Show Recap

“You know we gave Wynonna her name.”  If radio hosts Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale seemed startled, so too were listeners of The Buddy & Jim Show when Asleep At The Wheel founder Ray Benson dropped this little nugget.

As Benson tells the story, Naomi Judd was a nurse living in Los Angeles and dating guitarist Johnny Nicholas. Sitting around listening to the blues shouter Wynonie Harris, she blurted out: “I think I am going to name Christina Wynonie….but with an a at the end.”

“She was 13 years old,” a startled Benson recounts, “and I said ‘You’re going to change your daughter’s name?’  We had ‘Route 66’out at the time and I said, ‘Well, don’t forget Wynonna’ and that’s how she came to be.”

We Are Family: Willie & Bobbie Nelson’s Brother and Sister Ruminations – Review

This has been quite a year for Willie Nelson. His duet with Carlene Carter “Troublesome Waters” on her “Carter Girl” album may just be my favorite record of 2014. And singing and playing with Rhonda Vincent on the title track of “Only Me” has helped earn the Queen of Bluegrass a nomination for Best Bluegrass Album. We just got word that Nelson will help kick off the Grammy weekend February 5 with an appearance in the Grammy Foundation Legacy Concert commemorating humanitarian musicians.

Additionally Willie’s been releasing records at a pace greater than someone half his age or dare I say a third his years. Over the past two years he has put out four albums. “Band of Brothers” reached number one on the U.S. country charts following its July release and here we are with another new record, “December Day” just in time for the holiday season.

iTunes UK Country Chart Roundup – Week of 2nd December, 2014

Willie-Nelson-and-Sister--010

Continuing her reign at #1 on Country Albums, Dolly Parton’s ‘Blue Smoke’ as usual plays first fiddle to ‘The Very Best of’ at #4, while the Nashville Cast’s ‘Christmas With Nashville’ stays at #2 for another week. Another constant, Taylor Swift is a key player in the top 25 with ‘Red’ in the #3 spot again, although this time ‘Taylor Swift’ is second-in-command at #7 with ‘Fearless (Platinum Edition)’ rounding out the top 10 at #9. Her next entry on the chart however isn’t until #20 with ‘Speak Now (Bonus Track Version)’ followed by ‘Fearless’ at #21, showing her monopoly fading somewhat in the weeks since the release of her pop album ‘1989’.
