Zac Brown Band ‘Jekyll + Hyde’ – Album Review

1035x1035-zbbalbumcover

The influence Zac Brown Band hold in country music can’t be understated, for the release of ‘Jekyll + Hyde’ broke new commercial grounds with the collaboration between Zac Brown’s label Southern Ground, Big Machine Label Group and John Varvatos Records. I highly rate Zac Brown as one of the most creative musicians of any genre, and this label partnership did hint at something special and interesting coming from their studios, implied even further by the chosen title of the album ‘Jekyll + Hyde’.

Billboard Chart Roundup – Week of April 11th, 2015

zac-brown-band-homegrown

Well, I guess controversies have their uses. That media shitstorm we got caught in last week has propelled Little Big Town’s ‘Girl Crush’ from #17 to #3 on Hot Country Songs, #4 to #1 on Country Digital Songs, #20 to #2 on Country Streaming Songs and finally, from #32 to #26 on Country Airplay. It’s also helped their accompanying album ‘Pain Killer’ return to #7 from #15 on Top Country Albums. So you know, perhaps all worth it. It’s still not a lesbian song.

Elsewhere Canaan Smith has received a boost from his EP debuting at #16 on Top Country Albums, while Granger Smith’s ‘Backroad Song’ has come straight in at #25 on Hot Country Songs and #4 on Country Digital Songs, Striking Matches make their mark on the chart and Zac Brown Band surprisingly take this week’s Country Airplay #1 after just eleven weeks on the chart. Not bad for a song that doesn’t sound like much else on the radio. Read on for our full top 50s etc.

Zac Brown Band ‘Homegrown’ – Single Review

zac brown band homegrown

For those familiar with Zac Brown Band’s back catalogue, the announcement of new single ‘Homegrown’ may provide a little confusion. ‘Home Grown’ as it is styled initially referred to the band’s self-released debut album in 2005, as well as the original name of their label Southern Ground, launched in 2003 but later changed due to legal reasons. The term has therefore followed the group throughout their career, appearing as headlines on magazine cover features and the like. A quick Google of “Zac Brown Band Homegrown” reveals all of this and more. It therefore presents the question of why create that confusion when another single would do? They are, after all, seemingly unstoppable when it comes to all aspects of their career. Even if a track doesn’t hit it big on radio (which they invariably do anyway), the eight members still have extensive global touring, a record label and the Southern Ground food and music festival to focus on.

Zac Brown Band ‘Greatest Hits So Far…’ – Album Review

Zac-Brown-Band-Greatest-Hits-So-Far-CountryMusicRocks.net_

As a massive fan of Zac Brown Band, I was very excited for what I expected would be a new album announcement, following the release of their EP ‘The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1’ last December. Instead they decided to release a greatest hits album, only 3 full albums and 6 years into their career. I haven’t found out about any extenuating circumstances meaning they couldn’t write and record any new material, so to be honest this move baffles me, especially since as a band they are in their absolute prime, having just become only the fifth band of any genre to sell out Fenway Park without any supporting acts.

iTunes UK Country Chart Roundup – Week of 4th November, 2014

Zac+Brown+Zac+Brown+Band+Performs+Holmdel+eHXZU5OCmtCl

As expected again this week, Swift mania continues to take up the Country Albums chart despite the fact that Taylor has now gone pop with her fifth studio album ‘1989’. However, with ‘Fearless’ at #1 and ‘Red’ at #2, Florida Georgia Line see a surge to #3 with the deluxe edition of ‘Anything Goes’, while the deluxe version of Lady Antebellum’s ‘747’ also holds tight to #4. Of course, Taylor is plenty present throughout the rest of the chart, notching spots at #5 (‘Speak Now – Bonus Track Version’), #6 (‘Red – Deluxe Version’), #10 (‘Fearless – Platinum Edition’), and #18 (‘Speak Now – Extended Version’).

Doobie Brothers ‘Southbound’ – Album Review

doobiebrothers-southbound-cover-611

‘Southbound’ is a compilation of 12 of Doobie Brothers’ classic hits, recorded as duets with some of country music’s biggest names, such as Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton and Zac Brown Band. I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with Doobie Brothers before reviewing this album, and so my first experience of them was through this duets album.

On first listen I loved it. It fit with all of my stereotypes of rock ‘n roll, with the heavy riff-guitars, rock-harmonies in the chorus and Kiss-like vocals. In short, it was what I, as a nineties baby, thought ‘70s rock was like, after exposure to modern re-releases and covers of old rock songs. Continue reading
